Venice declined from the 15th century, when it defended Thessaloniki for the first time and lost to the Ottoman Turkish Empire. In 1453, Venice sent ships to help Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, to resist the invasion of the Turks. After Mohammed II captured Constantinople, he turned to invade Venice and caused huge losses in Venice.

The Black Death ravaged Venice in 1348 and made a comeback between 1575-1577. During these three years, as many as 50,000 people died from the Black Death, leaving only one third of the city's population . In 1630, the Black Death caused nearly one-third of citizens to die .

At the end of the Renaissance, Venice began to lose its status as an international trade center. At that time, Portugal became the main medium of trade between Europe and the East, affecting the source of Venice's enormous wealth. At the same time, French and Spanish hegemonism prevailed, the Italian War broke out, and Venice's political influence declined. However, the Venetian Empire was an exporter of agricultural products, and it remained an important manufacturing center until the mid-18th century.
