Burano ’s biggest feature is the colorful houses that can be seen everywhere on the island, and hence the name of the "colorful island". This small fishing village has a beautiful legend. The brightly colored house exterior is the fisherman ’s family who is afraid of their husbands can't find the houses on the way home. Another real reality is that these colored exterior walls were painted during the epidemic of the Black Death in the Middle Ages. The residents who were not sick were painted to separate with the white walls of the affected residents.

Today, Burano follows the tradition of the time, and now they will apply to the government when painting the exterior walls. With government's subsidies, there will provide several colors for the people to choose, which makes Burano still maintain beautiful colors.

The most famous production of Burano island is handmade lace products, so it is also called the "lace island".
