Gondola is a unique and most representative traditional rowing boat in Venice, Italy. The hull is completely painted black, and a boatman stands at the stern to row. Gondola has been the main means of transportation in Venice for centuries. Today's Venetians usually use more economical water buses to travel through the city's main waterways and other small islands in Venice. Gondola has been used for tourism.

Gondola has a very long history. The 11th century was the most prevalent period of Gondola. At that time, the number was over 10,000, but today there are only a few hundred Gondolas left in Venice. Gondola's exterior design was originally varied. In the 16th century, Gondola's appearance was very gorgeous. The nobles often took the beautifully carved gondola decorated with satin and silk to show off their wealth. In order to curb this extravagance, the Venetian government issued a decree in 1562, stipulating that all gondola must be painted black and unified its specific style. This tradition has been maintained, and today's gondola is also uniformly black, and it will be decorated as a flower boat only on special occasions.

 

Another said that in the middle of the 14th century, Europe was covered by the Black Death, and Venice was no exception. At that time, as many as one-third of the people who died of the Black Death in the century, the body exploded rapidly. It had to be transported by Gondola, and the government strictly prohibited extravagance and waste of style, and the black form of condolences to the Black Death has been in use today.
